Crime Prevention UnitCurrent Crime Prevention Delivery
The Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) manages funding allocated by government for the provision of crime reduction and community safety programmes. In 2005/06 this amounted to $6.538 million. The CPU distributes funding according to government approved criteria. Accordingly, the CPU funds partnership arrangements between the Ministry of Justice and metropolitan and large provincial Territorial Authorities (TAs), iwi, and Pacific People. The remainder of the funding is used to fund specific crime reduction projects delivered by or through smaller TAs and independent service providers. The details of current funding arrangements are published each year in the Vote Justice Report on Non-departmental Outputs (B14 -Justice) (PDF Adobe Acrobat v6 149KB). The CPU ensures that government funding is used as effectively as possible in supporting crime reduction activities. Establishment, maintenance and ongoing development of effective crime reduction partnerships is essential to achieve measurable crime reduction. CPU funding and guidance is generally directed to locations with significant crime problems. The CPU aims to provide particular support to those crime reduction initiatives that are demonstrably effective. The complement of partnerships, activities and service providers supported by the CPU changes each year. The CPU has developed a funding policy that directs funding into programmes that are effective in reducing crime problems. In 2004 -2005 a contestable funding round was used to secure project applications from TAs. The CPU funded the proposals that demonstrated both need and likely crime reduction benefits. |
